Sydney Story Factory is a not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people, offering programs for upper-primary and high-school students who have learnt the basics of writing. Programs target marginalised young people, and those from Indigenous and non-English speaking backgrounds, but are open to everyone.
At Sydney Story Factory, trained volunteer tutors offer free help to write stories of all kinds, supporting students' use of expressive language and ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings. All programs are project based, so every student walks away with a published piece of work.
The organisation aims to increase enthusiasm for writing and boost confidence, allowing students to find their own voice.
Insipration for the Sydney Story Factory came from 826 Valencia, a writing centre for young people founded by novelist Dave Eggers and educator Ninive Caligari in San Francisco in 2002. The Sydney Story Factory brings the model to Australia, although it is not officially affiliated with 826 Valencia.
